Knighton Market saw a busy and buoyant trade on Thursday, January 29, with 756 new season lambs and 168 cull sheep passing through the ring, according to McCartneys.
New season lambs averaged 343.99p per kilo and £320.50 per head overall, with smaller lambs under 43kg attracting a premium. The top prices included 365p for 42kg Char X lambs (£153.50) from TL Morris & Co, and 362p for 40.5kg Texel X lambs (£146.50) from K Tortoriello T/A M/S Price Bros. On a per-head basis, the top price reached £160 for 59kg Texel X lambs from JR Thomas & Son, while 56kg Mule lambs sold to £155 from RJ Lewis. The SQQ overall average per head was £148.21.
The market noted that six bidders were competing for most lambs under 45kg, while heavier tegs over 45kg saw a steadier trade. Observers said prices for the bigger lambs could improve once numbers thin out. Overall, the lamb trade was 25p per kilo up on last week, reflecting strong demand across the board.
Cull ewes also met a strong and competitive trade, averaging £120.05 per head. Top prices included £204 for Texel ewes from JE Huffer, £149 for Mule ewes from JE Wilding, and £120 for Beulah ewes from PM Thomas. Rams averaged £105 per head, with Texel X rams selling to £146 from MO Pugh. The market reported high demand for all types of ewes, with meated ewes bringing the highest prices but leaner types selling well in comparison. Sellers are encouraged to book ewes on Wednesdays to help buyers plan.
Looking ahead, store sheep sales are scheduled for Friday, February 6, followed by store sheep and cattle sales on Friday, February 20, which will include breeding cattle, cull cows, feeding bulls, steers, heifers, and fodder.
