There was a strong trade for lambs and cull ewes at Knighton Market on Thursday, November 6, with McCartneys reporting an entry of 635 new season lambs and 150 cull sheep.
New season lambs averaged 313.24p/kg, or 312.21p/kg overall, with demand remaining firm across all weight categories. The top price reached 361p/kg for 33.5kg Texel cross lambs, selling for £121 from W. Jones. The same vendor also achieved 329p/kg for 38kg Texel crosses, making £125. The highest price per head was £170 for 62kg Texel cross lambs from E. and W. Griffiths.
Auctioneers described it as a “fantastic trade for the time of year,” with particularly strong demand for light, shapely lambs in the 33–39kg range. Heavier lambs also sold well, with many over 49kg making upwards of 305p/kg.
Cull ewes averaged £110.68, topping at £170 for Mule ewes from M. O. Pugh. Other notable prices included £159 for Mule ewes from C. and L. Bowen & Sons, £155 for Texel crosses from Edwards Partners, and £130 for Welsh ewes from J. B. Morris.
A smaller entry of ewes met a firm trade, with strong prices achieved where quality was on offer. Leaner and grazing ewes continued to attract keen competition.
Vendors are reminded to book sheep in by Wednesday to help inform buyers of expected numbers for upcoming sales.
