Over recent weeks NFU Cymru have been holding a series of policy surgeries across Wales to help farmers understand what the Welsh Government’s new Sustainable Farming Scheme (SFS) will mean in practice.

With the scheme due to launch in January 2026 and the current Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) being phased out, there is a great deal of interest – and concern – among farming families about the changes ahead.

The surgeries have been designed to give members clear, practical information about the steps they need to take in the next few months.

The sessions have highlighted the need for members to address four key actions ahead of next year:

• Set up their One Login on the Welsh Government Gateway

• Complete the ready reckoner tool on the Welsh Government, website which compares the two options available to farmers- Ensure the Data Confirmation exercises are completed

• For those in rental agreements, speak to landlords or tenants to clarify what land will be available and who can claim it.

These practical steps will help farmers avoid difficulties later on and ensure that everyone is as prepared as possible when the transition begins.

NFU Cymru President Aled Jones said: “The Sustainable Farming Scheme represents one of the biggest changes in Welsh farming for a generation. It is vital that every Welsh farmer takes the time to understand the scheme, check their data carefully and think through how their business will adapt.

“NFU Cymru have worked tirelessly to make sure members are informed and supported and these surgeries have shown just how important it is to talk things through face to face. Farmers want clarity and certainty so they can plan ahead – that is exactly what we are trying to provide.”

As the scheme moves closer, NFU Cymru will continue to engage with Welsh Government to ensure a fair, practical scheme that keeps farm businesses productive and resilient whilst delivering for the environment.

Farmers can find details of upcoming surgeries on the NFU Cymru website or by contacting the office directly.
