Brecon Market saw a lively trade on Tuesday, March 24, with finished Hoggets and cull sheep attracting strong demand from buyers.
McCartneys auctioneer Tom Pritchard reported a smaller show of Hoggets, including many hill-bred and lighter sorts, but the top-quality animals still commanded impressive prices. Premium Hoggets reached 440p per kilo, while heavyweights traded up to £225 per head. Lighter Hoggets, weighing around 35kg, made up to 426p per kilo, with very light sorts (29kg) reaching 411.5p per kilo.
The market saw 308 finished Hoggets sold, with an overall average of 418.8p per kilo and a standard quality quote (SQQ) of 422.4p per kilo. Notable top sellers included I Harris, D J Powell & Son, and T J E J Jones & Son, who all achieved prices above 430p per kilo for their best Hoggets.
Cull sheep also experienced a buoyant trade, with ewes up £8–£15 on the week. Lighter hill ewes fetched strong prices per kilo, while the best ewes traded over £170, and rams sold for more than £150 each.
Finished Hoggets and cull sheep will return next Tuesday, with gates opening at 6:45am and weighing from 7am, ahead of the 9:30am sale.
