Young people across Wales are being offered paid work placements on commercial farms, providing an opportunity to gain practical experience in agriculture without needing a farming background.

Farming Connect is coordinating placements lasting up to 12 weeks, with roles available across a variety of farming systems, including beef, sheep, dairy, and poultry. The programme aims to give participants hands-on experience, build skills, and offer insight into a potential career in the farming industry.

One of the opportunities in the Brecon area is at Glwydcaenewydd Farm, a 300-acre organic beef and sheep farm. The placement offers exposure to a diverse range of activities, from livestock management to tourism, hedging, and fencing. Accommodation may be available, depending on discussion with the farm.

The programme also includes placements across Wales, such as Derwydd Farm in Corwen, Mathafarn near Machynlleth, Pentrefelin Farm in Lampeter, and Woodcroft Farm in Wrexham, each offering different experiences in dairy, poultry, and beef production. Some placements provide accommodation, while others focus on skill-building and workplace integration.

Applications are open now and close this coming Monday (December 8). Placements at Glwydcaenewydd, Derwydd, Mathafarn, and Pentrefelin are set to begin in early 2026, with timings depending on farm schedules and seasonal demands.

Farming Connect emphasises that an agricultural background is not necessary; the initiative is open to anyone interested in gaining practical experience in farming. Participants will also benefit from mentorship, advice, and support from experienced farming professionals.
