A new Powys film club is set to bring a classic science fiction film to local movie fans - 40 years since its release.

Only a few cinemas across the country are able to show ET: the Extra-Terrestrial during its 40th anniversary year. The planning team from group ‘Sunday at the Cinema’ needed to get special permission from the Spielberg Foundation before it would grant a licence to show the film.

Everyone is encouraged to come along and celebrate the classic, Oscar-winning film’s 40th anniversary today (May 8) at 5pm, at Wyeside Arts Centre, Builth Wells.

Sunday at the Cinema is a new community group that began showing wide-ranging, classic films at Wyeside Arts Centre a few months ago. They first held an open meeting in 2019 to see if anyone else thought a film club would be a good idea, which was met with a positive response and lots of good suggestions.

The group has also received two private donations - a grant from Builth Wells Town Council and masses of practical help from Wyeside.

Fueled with all this support, they launched the film club with It’s A Wonderful Life last December.

In total they have screened five films, with two more planned this season. Attendance is good and increasing with every event.

Sunday at the Cinema brings together the tri-town community (Rhayader, Llandrindod, Builth and surrounding villages) to share moments of laughter and joy over fantastic films each month.

ET: the extra terrestrial starts promptly at 5pm at Wyeside Arts Centre, Castle St, Builth. Tickets are £6, available online via Wyeside or cash on the door - which s open at 4.30pm. Further information is available from [email protected] or on Facebook - just search ‘Sunday at the Cinema - Builth Film Club’.

June’s film is O Brother, Where Art Thou? which will be screened on 19 June at 5pm. After the film, people are invited to grab a drink at the bar and stay for a chat - a time to catch up with friends and meet new ones.
