The last stretch of the Heart of Wales walking trail opened today as VIPs and ramblers assembled at Llandrindod Wells railway station.

The walk loosely follows the same route as the Heart of Wales railway line, which last year celebrated its 150th anniversary.

The walking trail now runs a distance of 141 miles (226km) from Shropshire to Camarthenshire.

Along the route are 29 railway stations, meaning that walkers can pick and choose their journey, hopping on and off the trains that run daily on the Heart of Wales railway.

The final stage was designed by former tourism development professor Les Lumsden.

He said the aim is to get people enjoying the outdoors and using the train rather than travelling by car.

Among the VIPs and walkers who attended the opening ceremony on the platform at Llandrindod Wells railway station was Brecon and Radnorshire AM Kirsty Williams, Powys High Sheriff David Price, Powys deputy leader Aled Davies, Llandrindod Wells deputy mayor Steve Deeks-D’Silva and Llandrindod county councillor Gary Price.

Ms Williams, the Welsh government’s education minister, said: “I was delighted to attend the opening of the trail and want to put on record my thanks to those involved in the trail, especially the organisers and the volunteers who helped to provide the funding.

“Showcasing the beautiful scenery we have in Brecon and Radnorshire is so important. The trail should help bring visitors to the area, increase footfall in local businesses and boost the local economy.”
