THE Tabernacle, the Welsh chapel bought by former Oasis manager Alan McGee, is to host its final gig.

John Power and Jay Lewis from 90s indie favourites Cast are due to play a Musicians Against Homeless benefit night at the former chapel in Talgarth on September 1 – but that will be the last time the venue hosts a live music event.

The nationwide fundraiser to support homeless charities was launched, with a performance by Cast, at the Tabernacle in September last year.

Mr McGee and his wife Kate Holmes, who runs the venue, bought the derelict former chapel in 2014.

During the past three years artists including Super Furry Animals frontman Gruff Rhys and Liverpool bands the Farm and Cast have played at the 160-year-old chapel, that has room for just over 100 people, with tickets usually priced at just £3.

Ms Holmes, who said she has completed a course to be a non religious, inter-faith spiritual minister, said she now intends to concentrate on using the venue for spiritual events.

She said: “My dream for the Tabernacle was always to do something more spiritual.

“I’ve done a reverend course over a year and a half and would like to offer the Tabernacle as an alternative venue for non religious weddings. I could do gay weddings or goth funerals, people who don’t follow the norm, or a pagan wedding.

“I’m a spiritual minister, I’ve done a course over a year and a half studying different religions, and had an examination board. It’s inter-faith ministry.”

Ms Holmes said her husband no longer had time to devote to organising gigs as he has resumed management duties with Happy Mondays singer Shaun Ryder and The Jesus and Mary Chain.

She said: “It’s been great having the bands here but it’s only been every three or six months and it’s usually people we know but he can’t do it now as he’s too busy.”

American singer Brix Smith, who is best known for being a member of The Fall, performed at the Tabernacle on Saturday night. Alan McGee also interviewed the singer who has also found fame in television and fashion.

Ms Holmes said the star names who’ve played at the Tabernacle have attracted visitors from across Britain and the world.

She said: “People have come from London, the last time people flew in from Washington DC, and across from the Valleys and Shropshire, Gloucester and even Germany, they’ve come from everywhere.”
