A WOMAN said she was reduced to tears after her cat was shot in the head with a pellet in broad daylight in Llandrindod Wells.
Ginger tomcat George was shot in the face with either a pellet gun or a BB gun in Trefonen while his owner Sarah Godman was out.
Two-year-old George went out at about 3.30pm on Monday, February 11 while owner Ms Godman was picking up one of her other cats from the vets.
The mother-of-two, who lives in Trefonen with her partner and children, said George was outside for 20 minutes at most and it was in that time he was attacked.
She said: “He went out at around 3.30pm and it happened in the space of 20 minutes while we were out. I was picking up my youngest cat from the vets because they’d been in to be neutered.”
Ms Godman, who always makes sure her cats are secure in the house at night, said she didn’t initially see that the cat was wounded. She said: “I didn’t notice in the beginning. It wasn’t until my partner got home and had a look that I knew he’d been shot in the face.
“I cried when I found out. It’s just awful.”
The beloved moggy was taken to the vets that evening where he was given an injection and a course of antibiotics. The pellet couldn’t be removed from George’s head straight away as it required an operation and he had eaten that day, however it was removed on the Tuesday.
Ms Godman was given the pellet by the vet so she could see how big it was. The feline has since finished a course of antibiotics.
Ms Godman said the attack, which has been reported to Dyfed-Powys Police, had made George afraid to go out. She said her cat had always been very outgoing and friendly in the past. She said: “He doesn’t go out much now, or if he does he always stays close by.
“It (the incident) has been logged with the police but without any evidence, they can’t do much.”
Ms Godman said when she was at the vets with George, she was told it was the third incident the vets had dealt with since September in which a cat had been shot in the head using a pellet or a BB gun. She said: “I’m annoyed. I just don’t understand why they’d do it to be honest. It really makes me angry.”
Ms Godman posted on Facebook to warn other cat owners in the area after the attack. In the post, she said it was lucky that the pellet had not been any higher otherwise it could have killed her pet.
In the post, which she added to the social media within hours of George being shot, she said: “This is a warning to the cat owners of Trefonen. My cat has been shot in the face with a pellet/BB gun. We have now been to the vets tonight, and he is lucky it didn’t go any higher because he wouldn’t be here now.”
She also said: “I really don’t know why someone would do this to an innocent animal”.
The Facebook post has since received 236 reactions, 87 shares and 65 comments including one user who said: “My cat was killed by someone shooting her with an air gun, it’s horrendous. I hope you find whoever did it.”
A Dyfed-Powys Police spokeswoman said: “We have received a report that a cat had been shot in the face by a BB pellet gun in Llandrindod Wells.
“The incident took place between 3.30pm and 4.30pm on February 11, leaving the cat requiring an operation.”
