Williams Coaches in Brecon have been helping out people stranded in the blizzards in mid Wales.

This is one of their 4x4s negotiating the A470 between Libanus and Storey Arms on Friday afternoon.

The family run company, based at Cambrian Way, is currently unable to operate any of its 30 coaches because of the atrocious weather conditions which have blocked off the A470 and A40.

Instead the company is putting its small fleet of 4x4s to good use by running emergency errands helping members of the public who get in touch asking for help.

John Williams, who runs the company with his sister Rose, said the response from the public and his drivers has been fantastic.

He said: "Some of our drivers live in Merthyr and haven’t been able to get to work. But those who did have been helping to run errands. They didn’t have to as they’re getting paid for their time anyway, so it’s really good and quite brave of them."

Among those Williams Coaches have managed to help was Radio 1’s Greg James.

Greg has had to call off his Pedal to the Peaks 2018 charity challenge for Sport Relief because of the unprecedented weather. After scaling Mount Snowdon and Scafell Pike, Ben Nevis in Scotland proved to be one peak too far.

Unfortunately Greg’s physio became stranded in mid Wales and needed to get back to Cardiff. After the Radio 1 DJ put out a Twitter appeal for help, Williams Coaches were only too happy to come to the rescue.

Other people who have had help from Williams Coaches have been people who have been stranded in their cars, pensioners who needed help to do their shopping and people who needed to get to hospital.

Mr Williams said their 4x4s have also been helping nurses employed by the care firm QCare to get to their elderly and vulnerable clients.

"It’s been brilliant really. People have been very grateful and our Facebook page and Twitter have been buzzing.

"We’re a third generation family run business. The company was set up by my grandparents, Mary and John, 62 years ago. They handed it on to my dad John, who is still very much involved, and my sister Rose does the operational side. She was taking the calls on Friday.

"This is the worst snow any of us can remember. I suppose the last time was 1981-2.

"You just do your bit to help."
