In celebrating 60 years playing rugby in the Black Mountains, the members and guests attending Gwernyfed RFC’s Anniversary Ball dug deep to support a number of charities that are central to rural life in Wales.

On Saturday, October 11 those representing the five charities attended The Old Malthouse in Talgarth, Gwernyfed’s home, to receive cheques presented by Club Officers.

In doing so, Club Chairman, Gareth ‘Des’ Davies described the invaluable work that these and other organisations do to help in circumstances that often find people isolated, lonely and frightened.

Mr Davies said: “Thanks to the huge generosity of those who donated at our Ball, the Club is delighted to be able to offer a little help to organisations that look after the wellbeing of so many people in our communities.

“We see the enjoyment that being fit and healthy and joining in with a sport that generates friendship and camaraderie can bring. Sadly, not everyone is in a position to share in such benefits, but we hope that we can help just a little to alleviate some of the difficulties people face.

“We may not always think so at 2:30pm on a Saturday, but as a Club we do attempt to stand back from time to time to remind ourselves and others that there’s more to life than just rugby.”
