CHURCH Recording Volunteers from the Arts Society: Brecknock have recently completed a painstaking recording of the Havard Chapel in Brecon Cathedral.

The Arts Society Church Recorders are dedicated to the promotion of church heritage throughout Great Britain.

Formerly the Lady Chapel of the Priory Church, and known for centuries as the Vicar’s Chapel, its restoration was carried out under the supervision of Sir Charles Nicholson Bart. Now known as the Havard Chapel or Regimental Chapel it contains a number of special gifts, a Roll of Honour commemorating all those who died in the two World Wars and personal memorial plaques on the backs of the pews.

The Colours of antecedent Regiments hang from the Chapel walls. Of particular interest are the Colours of 1st Battalion the 24th Regiment of Foot (Rorkes Drift) which served with such distinction during the Zulu War of 1879.

The final detailed and illustrated document contains photographs, scale diagrams and almost 900 names.

A copy was recently presented to the Dean at the Cathedral. Additional copies of the document will be kept at the National Library of Wales, Powys Archives, the Victoria and Albert Museum, Arts Society House and the Brecon Regimental Museum.

The Arts Society is grateful to the Havard Chapel Trustees who gave financial support towards the printing costs.
