The headteacher at Christ College has said he is “very proud” of all of the school’s GCSE pupils following today’s results.

Gareth Pearson, headteacher, said the Brecon school saw an overall GCSE pass rate of 96%, with 98% of pupils achieving a minimum of five GCSE passes including in Maths, English and a science.

The independent co-educational boarding and day school in Llanfaes, with 380 pupils on roll between the ages of seven to 18, uses the system, which was introduced in England last year, of grades 9-1. Grade 9 is equivalent to an A** and 8 is equivalent to an A.

Mr Pearson said the school’s performance in Maths was “outstanding” as 39% of results were at grade 9 to 8, with 15% at the highest grade of 9.

Other subjects where more than 25% of results were grades 8 to 9 included Art, Chemistry, French, History and Spanish.

The highest performing subjects in Christ College, which is in Llanfaes, with grades 8 to 9 were Music with 43% and Photography with 53%.

Top performers from Breconshire and Radnorshire include Daniel Sussmann from Llangors who achieved nine GCSEs at grades 8 and 9.

Other top performers from Powys are Sebastian Bailey of Crickhowell, Peter Price of Hay-on-Wye, and Llyr Thomas of Builth Wells who all got eight GCSEs at 8-9.

Sophie Jones from Merthyr Tydfil received nine GCSEs at 8-9, meanwhile from further afield are Sam Kang, Amelie Gauger and Jackie Chan who all received seven or more GCSEs at grades 8-9.

Mr Pearson said: “I feel very proud of all our pupils for their hard work and am grateful to our dedicated staff for continuing to positively implement this very big change to the curriculum and grading system.

“This is a great way to finish the year having seen successes continue across the school during the year and seeing our A level students achieve excellent results too.

“With 39% A*/A’s in our A-level results and now 26% of all GCSE results at level 8/9 it makes me feel very proud to be a part of this school.”
