A Bronllys nurse has completed the London Marathon in a fundraising effort for Powys Health Charity, raising thousands to support respiratory patients across the county.

Cheryl Samuel, Clinical Nurse Specialist in Respiratory for Powys Teaching Health Board, took on the 26.2-mile course in the capital, finishing in under four hours.

Describing the experience, she said: “Wow, what a day Sunday was! I was so nervous that morning and London felt warm, even early in the morning. The runners were all so friendly, and everyone was excited but nervous about the challenge ahead.

“The marathon itself was probably one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, both mentally and physically. The crowds were amazing, and I managed to spot my family for cwtches at mile 17! I tried to stay consistently fuelled and hydrated throughout and actually felt strong in the last few miles!

“I’m so pleased to have run a sub-4 marathon! All those months of training on those dark and wet mornings, with some great friends, paid off. My favourite part of the race was probably Tower Bridge. I was hoping to enjoy The Mall more, but I think I just wanted the finish line to come by then.

“Thank you so much to Powys Health Charity for giving me the opportunity to run in the London Marathon! It really did live up to expectations and it’s definitely one off the bucket list! I’ll never forget my first marathon, and what an experience it was.”

It was Cheryl’s first marathon, but she had previously competed in the Man vs Horse race in Llanwrtyd Wells.

So far, she has raised more than £3,300 for Powys Health Chairty, with donations still being accepted. Her JustGiving fundraising page can be found online at: www.justgiving.com/campaign/phclondonmarathon2026
