A renowned writer and curator is to visit Gwernyfed High School next month to give a talk on a prominent Welsh artist.

Peter Wakelin, who was formerly director of collections at the National Museum of Wales, will deliver an art lecture on Charles Burton.

For over six decades Charles Burton has been one of the major figures of art in Wales. He was born in Treherbert and grew up in Rhondda Fawr, in South Wales. After going on to teach art, Charles became head of painting at Liverpool College of Art and head of art and design at the Polytechnic in Wales.

Charles paints a wide variety of welsh landscapes, including still life, house interiors and figures plus work that features Welsh valley scenes of mining towns, such as rows of terraced houses in a typical setting. He paints for himself, not for an audience, and his work is in many collections in Wales and across the world.

Charles, now regarded as the elder statesman of Welsh contemporary painting, reflects the range and extraordinary use of paint and colour, which is his hallmark.

Peter Wakelin’s lecture ‘Charles Burton and Still Painting’ is on Saturday, March 5 at 7:30pm at Gwernyfed High School.
