A MEMORIAL service has been held for a Breconshire community champion on the day it was revealed she'd been named in the Queen's Birthday Honours. Sadly Margaret Thomas, of Ystradgynlais, was unaware she'd been awarded the BEM as the notification came through on the day she died following a battle with cancer. But her family organised a special service at the Tabernacle Chapel, Ystradgynlais to celebrate her life and achievements on the day the honours were announced. The retired teacher had raised thousands of pounds for charity and was involved as a volunteer in a number of community activities in the Swansea Valley town. BBC Wales broadcaster Roy Noble and Welsh rugby legend Clive Rowlands, from Cwmtwrch, both paid tribute to their long time friend at the Saturday, June 14 service. Son Gareth, 35, said: "Saturday was a celebration and a proud day." For more on this story see this week's Brecon & Radnor Express - on sale now
