AFTER a fallow year, HowTheLightGetsIn returned to its magical setting on the banks of the river Wye in Hay-on-Wye over the May bank holiday.

The world’s largest philosophy and music festival explored the theme of Darkness, Authority and Dreams through an extensive ideas debate programme, a full music line-up and thought-leading comedy sessions.

Boasting over 500 events and artists across 12 stages throughout late May bank holiday weekend, HowTheLightGetsIn brought the world’s leading thinkers together in various atmospheric and intimate venues on the edge of the Black Mountains, alongside the river Wye.

The festival opened; celebrating its brand new Riverside Site location, on Friday with an idyllic programme of debates and talks, including philosopher and activist Noam Chomsky’s participation live from Arizona. Exploring the festival’s theme, Chomsky was joined by the author of Reckless Mind, Mark Lilia, and economist Deidre McCloskey to confront the darkness that authority can bring.

The Riverside Site has more on offer than ever before, in its new home on a glorious stretch of the River Wye just steps from the Globe Site.

Hosting some of the biggest talks and debates, both the Arena and Spiegel Tent played an important part in the weekend with a spectacular circus, masked balls and comedy sessions.

Meanwhile, the Globe Site held its own with a fantastic line-up of debates, pop-up restaurants and stages offering a fulfilling programme of edgy bands and comedians as the nights drew in over Hay-On-Wye.

HowTheLightGetsIn Festival Founder and philosopher, Hilary Lawson, commented: “It’s good to be back here in Hay-On-Wye. So much has changed since we were last here, just two years ago, and it’s always endearing to see the festival and event culture growing – pioneered by thought leaders and advocating the power of new ideas and new culture.

“Our spectacular new Riverside location has been well received and we hope everybody leaves the festival feeling inspired and considered.

“There is no doubt that next year will be even bigger with even more to see and do – and in a year there will be further change in the world.”
