Cyclists flocked to Builth Wells as Builth Bike Bash had what organisers called “possibly the best” year yet.
After a year of in 2020, Builth Bike Bash was back for 2021 - bringing with it around 300 people including 160 cyclist,s who were aged between two and 76, as well as more than 100 non-riders.
The cyclists were all aiming for a combined total distance of the Mens and Womens Tour Of Britian - 1,209 miles - which was “easily reached” as the final total mileage of the event was a whopping 1,632 and a half miles which is equivalent to cycling the full length of the UK - from John o’Groats in Scotland to World’s End in England - twice.
The event on Sunday, September 12- pictured right and inset - was officially opened by mayor of Builth Gwyn Davies, who was impressed by the ability and determination of the kids riding laps.
Bonna Williams, one of the organising committee members said: “The atmosphere is fantastic, everyone comes along to enjoy themselves, and the kids amaze me every year with their determination and stamina.
“It’s one of my favourite events of the year. Thanks to everyone who came along to ride, to watch or to help. We’re looking forward to next year already”
Also contributing to the day’s success were The Bulls Cycling Club, who hosted a fun skills session, Freedom Leisure who ran balance bike sessions, and Builth Fest Carnival committee who ran a raffle and bottle stall.
The event ran from 11am until 4pm, with the first hour restricted to less confident riders, pushchairs, wheel chairs, scooters and balance bikes.
Described by organisers as a “great success”, the return to The Groe in Builth made the event feel more like a “community event” according to the organising committee who said that many attending families brought a picnic and made it into a day out.
The festival, which had spend a few years in a different venye, has been running every year since 2011 - not including 2020 due to the pandemic.
