BRECON RFC’S promised tractor and trailer victory lap of Brecon brought the town to a standstill on Monday afternoon.

The team’s head coach, and former Wales international, Andy Powell promised moments after his team captured the WRU National Plate at the Principality Stadium on Sunday that his team would tour the town the following day.

"We will thoroughly enjoy the night, trust me on that," said Powell immediately after his team won the first national title in the club’s 150 year history with a thrilling 21-23 victory over Bonymaen.

The second year head coach promised: "We’ve got a tractor and trailer going through Brecon tomorrow so we’ll have all the boys on the trailer, get ready for some photos tomorrow."

Hundreds of fans turned out to see the victorious team, standing on hay bales on a trailer towed by a tractor, travel from the clubhouse on the Watton along Glamorgan Street and through High Street into the Bulwark.

The parade, which started just after 4pm, was led by Powell in a small 4x4 gator buggy driven by club sponsor Gary Bowen who admitted he was persuaded to take on the driving responsibilities on Monday afternoon. The parade is the brainchild of Powell, who is known as one of Welsh rugby’s larger than life characters.

"I was asked to be the driver about two hours ago. This is the nearest thing we could find to a golf buggy," said Gary in a nod to the coach’s infamous 2010 trip along the M4 motorway after celebrating a Welsh victory he had been a part of.

Sharon Williams, stewardess at Brecon Rugby Club and Powell’s aunt, said: "I went to the game and it was magical. I can’t explain it I’ve been to watch Andy play over the years but to watch Brecon Rugby Club run out at the stadium has been an experience."

Among those who had come to the packed clubhouse on Monday afternoon were brothers Owain and Iestyn Evans-Taylor and friend Freddy Bowen, who are all pupils at Sennybridge Primary School, and play for Brecon’s junior sides.

Eight-year-old Iestyn was a mascot for the team on Sunday and said: "I went out with one of the players and it was really good and the best part was the tunnel."

Iestyn and Freddy both play for Brecon’s under eight’s team who formed the guard of honour when the teams ran on to the Principality Stadium pitch.
