A Victorian milestone in Llandrindod Wells has been put forward to become listed by the Welsh Government’s historic environmental service Cadw.

The town’s only milestone, which is located on Tremont Road and marks eight miles to Builth Wells and 26 to Newtown, it has been submitted to Cadw Powys County Councillor Jake Berriman for consideration as a listed building.

Cllr Berriman who represents Llandrindod North, is now trying to find out more about the history of the old milestone which can be seen on a Victorian map which is estimated to be from 1887 to 1902 - pictured below.

Cllr Berriman said: “Cadw have now acknowledged the application for spot listing which I made and will be appointing an inspector to take a view on whether it should join other buildings of historic importance on the statutory lists made by the minister.

“I have been asked whether I have any more information about the stone, its age, detail on who erected it etc. I have updated my Facebook post asking local people whether they have any information or anecdotes and stories about the milestone as buildings like this can have as much value for their social value as much as their built form.

“I am hoping that through the pages of the Brecon and Radnor Express we can extend that ask and hopefully pull to the surface any points of interest which will help to justify the milestone becoming listed and the protection gained by this change in status.”

The milestone - pictured right - is not the only echo to the past in Llandrindod which was developed as a spa town in the 19th century.

Still boasting beautiful Victorian and Edwardian buildings, the town hosts a Victorian festival every year.

Cllr Berriman had taken to his social media pages to ask whether anybody in Llandrindod or the surrounding areas had any information about the old milestone.

Residents in the area have the, properly advised, repainting of milestone in hand as Cadw makes its decision - something which was highlighted in the a post by Cllr Berriman to Facebook which asked for information about the milestone. .

Cllr Berriman said: “The information that I have provided will now be carefully considered as part of a desk assessment.

“If there is interest, Cadw will ask an inspector to visit the site for a closer look and to undertake additional research, if necessary, in order to fully understand the “building” and help them establish whether or not it is of special interest. They advise that this can be time-consuming but requests to list will normally be completed within six months.

“The main criteria used to decide whether buildings should be included on the statutory lists are special Architectural Interest and special Historic Interest, so let’s hope Llandrindod North’s milestone is deemed worthy. I’ll keep you posted.”
