IT was only a few months ago when John Morgan was having a 9kg tumour removed from his stomach, but now the Builth runner has conquered the London Marathon to raise money for charity.
Ex-soldier John, 54, was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer that does not respond to chemotherapy or radiotherapy so had to undergo an operation to remove the tumour. He mentioned taking part in the London Marathon three months after his operation as soon as he got the all clear.
The money was raised for Cancer Research, a charity John says he feels passionate about. "I’ve had it myself and I’m getting over it now. I just wanted to inspire others who are going through it to see that there is life after cancer."
John’s wife Liz said: "It was a terrible time for both of us. My daughter was getting married that year in Cyprus and John unfortunately could not make it. My son got married later that year and he did attend the wedding and we got married on September 5 that year. So it was an awful time to be so unwell"
John, who now works as an learning support assistant for adults with learning difficulties, had been training for about four months and took part in a couple of half marathons for practice.
He has raised over £2000 so far. He said: "I am very proud of what I have achieved since finding out I had cancer just this time last year."
