Increased security measures at this year’s Royal Welsh Show will include bag searches and extra police on site.

Europe’s largest agricultural show opens on Monday, July 24 at the showground at Llanelwedd near Builth Wells.

Up to 55,000 people can attend the show on any one day and competitors, exhibitors and visitors will start arriving from this weekend.

Organisers, the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society (RWAS), have said there is nothing to suggest any incident will happen at the event, that runs until Thursday, but have increased security in line with the heightened terror threat level in the UK.

A statement from the RWAS said: "There is nothing to suggest any incident will happen at the show, however, to ensure our guests can relax and enjoy the show, we are increasing the security provision during the week, in line with the national trend. These measures, designed to reassure, will include an increased security staff, a larger police presence and random bag searches at the entrances to the showground."

Visitors are being asked to follow advice including Please allowing extra time for arrival at the showground and be ready to show all relevant tickets, passes or badge when asked.

The RWAS said: "Please ensure that if you have a vehicle pass, it is correctly displayed in your windscreen before approaching the carpark/showground entrance. Please report anything suspicious to, the police, a steward or staff member. Please help us by complying swiftly with any requests from stewards or staff member."

Dyfed-Powys Police said it has a close relationship with show chiefs and their security team and visitor safety and security is of "paramount importance".

The force has also used its social media channels to warn it will be conducting checks to ensure vehicles, including caravans, visiting the Young People’s Village at the showground are roadworthy.
