James Evans has asked the Welsh Government to help provide financial stability for farmers in “very uncertain times”.

The Brecon and Radnorshire MS asked at the Senedd about the funding available from the Glastir farmland management scheme.

Glastir funding is available to people in Wales who have control over agricultural land or an interest in common land.

Mr Evans said: “We're seeing Glastir funding being rolled on a yearly basis, with contracts being renewed.

“What my local NFU would like to see is those contracts being rolled forward up to the start of the sustainable farming scheme to give farmers some assurance of long-term stability and funding.

“Is that something that the Government is looking to do to make sure that our farmers have some stability in very uncertain times?”

The Government’s sustainable farming scheme has set out a new approach to post-Brexit agricultural support.

Rural Affairs Minister, Lesley Griffiths, said that because of uncertainty in the Government’s budgets, she was not able to do what Mr Evans had requested.

She said: “These are very uncertain times, not made easier by leaving the European Union and by the challenging financial situation that we're in.

“I have asked my officials to give me advice around Glastir as to whether I can provide any assurance beyond 2023. That will come in the next couple of months.”
