James Evans is calling on the Welsh Government to call for “damaging taxes” on businesses to be reversed.

The Brecon and Radnorshire MS said at the Senedd that almost 94 per cent of Welsh firms are family-owned.

He told First Minister, Eluned Morgan: “They're the backbone of high streets across my constituency and, I'm sure, other Members' constituencies.

“Yet, instead of supporting them, Labour's tax addiction is crippling them. We already suffer with the highest business rates in Great Britain.

“We have businesses facing higher employer national insurance and raids on business property relief. What does this mean?

“It means less investment, fewer jobs and more boarded-up shops in our town centres.

“You talk a good game about regeneration, while in reality the only thing that Labour delivers is higher taxation.

“Will you, First Minister, join us on these benches in calling for these damaging taxes to be reversed so we can show that Wales is open for business and give our family firms the backing that they deserve?”

Ms Morgan said she could not believe the Tories were giving Labour lessons on taxation.

She told Mr Evans: “The highest tax burden in 70 years was under your watch. We are serious about making sure that we are in a position where we can pay for local services and that we invest in our communities, and that's what we're doing.”

Speaking after the session, Mr Evans said: “It’s time to show that Wales is open for business. That means reversing these damaging tax hikes, backing our family firms, and giving our high streets the support they need to thrive.”
