Returning to Britain for a tour after training and performing as a flamenco dancer in Seville in Spain, Josie will find herself back at her home town in Brecon, after performing in Hay-on-Wye earlier in the month.
She will be touring Britain in April with her group, Brujas, who will be performing in Hay-on-Wye on April 14 at 6pm at Tomatitos Tapas Bar, and in Brecon on April 21 at 9pm at The Clarence Inn.
The group name, Brujas, means ‘witches’ in Spanish, and is a reference to the fact that the group of three are an all-woman group, something which is fairly uncommon for flamenco groups. Asked about this, Josie said: “Female guitarists are rare to find, but she’s a very close friend and very talented.”
It will be the first time the two other members of the group will have visited the UK. Josie said that she was excited to be coming back home, “especially with the group from Spain.”
“I’ve come back before, but this time I’m bringing my group.”
As well as being a professional flamenco dancer, Josie trained as a contemporary dancer with the National Dance Company. She would occasionally come back to Wales to perform as a contemporary dancer.
Since switching back to flamenco dancing, she has come back to perform in the UK twice, once in 2017 and once in 2018, although only as an individual, making this time particularly special for her.
Commenting on her alopecia, which she revealed in the Brecon & Radnor Express in March, she said: “It hasn’t affected my dancing – I haven’t taken any time off. It also hasn’t affected my ability to teach Flamenco classes. The only thing is whether or not I choose to wear a wig.
“For some street performances, I wear wigs, for other performances I still have to decide.
“My friends say I don’t have to conform, and that I should break boundaries.”
She added that the other members of Brujas have been very supportive of her, saying: “They’re both really good friends and haven’t acted any differently towards me.
“They told me that dance should speak for itself and not how you look.”
Asked whether she will be wearing a wig for her performances in Wales, she said: “I don’t know, possibly! I might keep it as a surprise.”
