Hay Festival boss Peter Florence has called comic Ken Dodd, who has died aged 90, the "funniest comedian I’ve ever seen".

The Liverpool born comedian and singer, who was also knighted, made his third and final Hay Festival appearance at last summer’s event.

He had married Anne Jones, his partner of 40 years, at their house which was the same one he’d grown up in and died in, in the Liverpool suburb of Knotty Ash, on Friday.

Hay Festival boss Mr Florence paid tribute to the star on his Twitter account, with a nod to his reputation for famously over-running stage times.

Mr Florence tweeted: "A prince of players. Line for line the funniest comedian I’ve ever seen. Played Hay three times. Onstage time total 17 hours. Same jokes. New laughter. Same joy and warmth. #angel #genius."

Talgarth councillor William Powell was among those sharing their memories of the star’s festival appearances.

The Liberal Democrat tweeted: "Very sad to hear that Ken Dodd has died. Will never forget his 5 hour+ show @hayfestival back in the day. Thanks for the laughter #Happiness."
