KINGTON Choral Society has received a generous gift from an anonymous donor which comes at a time when the local choral choir is growing in numbers.
The choir currently has around 70 members and boasts a very strong tenor section, the envy of many a choir!
A caveat on the donation has led the KCS committee to discuss offering an annual bursary specifically to attract young singers – an idea instigated by MD Robert Evans.
Details are being finalised, but the aim would be to help support a student at the beginning of their musical career whilst giving them valuable experience of singing with a large choir. It will demand commitment on their part so will be mutually beneficial.
Tina Syme, KCS chair, remarks, “We are greatly enjoying being under the baton of Rob Evans who will be conducting his third concert in Kington at the end of November.
Through his professional contacts, as a member of the internationally acclaimed and much- recorded choir, The Sixteen, he has been able to invite some wonderful soloists to sing with us”
In fact, next May no fewer than six soloists from Harry Christophers’ The Sixteen will be joining KCS for a performance in Presteigne of Bach’s glorious St. John Passion.
Meanwhile the KCS singers concert on November 25, stays here in St Mary’s church. It will be an uplifting evening of music to herald the festive season – Handel, Britten and Vaughan Williams, with harpist Bronwen Wilkins and organist Hilary Norris accompanying.
The choir will be supported by a group of instrumentalists while young singers from The Birmingham Conservatoire and choir member Serena Jopson will solo.
Finally, Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus will surely send you out into the November night with a spring in your step!
