STAFF and customers at Freedom Leisure centres around Powys have been taking part in a sponsored speed cycle to raise money for charity.

Sites in Brecon Leisure Centre, Ystradgynlais Sports Centre, Builth Wells Sports Centre and Llandrindod Sports Centre each had two bikes in action from 10am-7pm on St David’s Day (March 1) with prizes awarded for the fastest times recorded to complete the 1km speed challenges.

At the same time keen cyclist and Freedom Leisure duty manager Gareth Lawrence cycled from site to site – a round trip of 171km – completing a 1km speed challenge at each centre. The event was held to raise money for the St David’s Hospice in Brecon and The South Powys Branch of Parkinsons.

The two charities have been chosen this year by Powys County Council chairman David Meredith as his two charities for his year in office. Wishing Gareth good luck for his cycle ride while taking part in a 1km speed challenge, Cllr David Meredith said: “I would like to thank Freedom Leisure for arranging this event and wish everyone well who is taking part.”

Gwyn Owen, Freedom Leisure area manager for Powys, said: “We are delighted to be working alongside Powys County Council in supporting these valued local charities. It’s an ideal opportunity for everyone to join in, exercise and raise money at the same time.”
