Funding for the Llandrindod Wells Town Champion has been approved for another year by Economy, Science and Transport Minister Edwina Hart.

Jude Boutle, the Town Champion, began her role, as part of the Welsh Government’s support for the Powys Local Growth Zones initiative, supporting the Llandrindod Wells Business Group in January 2015, after funding for the post was agreed by the Minister.

The Welsh Government has since committed further funding in 2016 for Jude’s reappointment and to build on the work to stimulate economic growth in the town. This continued support for the role is part of a wider commitment to the Powys Local Growth Zones initiative.

A number of priorities for the town, as identified by the Business Group, have been taken forward. These include ensuring the town is seen as a vibrant destination; supporting Powys Council to deliver town Wi-Fi; promoting Welsh Government Business Wales services to the town’s businesses; exploring how to enhance visitors’ sense of arrival; and enhancing the Lake Park area.

The Business Group’s annual progress report for 2015 highlights a number of successes, supported by Welsh Government and Jude including:

the creation of a new town brand, “Llandrindod Wellness”

approval of a feasibility study into maximising use of Lake Park to realise its full potential to attract visitors, host events, create business opportunities and enhance the environment for townspeople

Jude’s role in developing and facilitating Youth Markets for under 25 year old Powys entrepreneurs as a result of engagement with the Welsh Government’s Big Ideas Wales service.

Minister Edwina Hart said: “I am pleased the annual report has shown how the business led approach is helping to improve Llandrindod Wells’ economic sustainability.

“The Business Group and Town Champion approach is helping businesses to work more closely to identify and deliver their priorities, with support from Welsh Government.”

Jude said: “It was with great pleasure that I looked back at the progress we made during 2015. The Youth Markets and the Lake Park study are great examples of what can be done when everybody works together.

“I’d like to thank all the people of Llandrindod Wells, the local traders, business people and key stakeholders, together with the Welsh Government for all the support they’ve provided.”

Justin Baird Murray, Chair of the Llandrindod Wells Business Group and owner of the Metropole Hotel, said: “There are many positive things happening in Llandrindod Wells and we’ve delivered some exciting initiatives with our public and private sector partners.

“I’m pleased that Jude has been reappointed as our Town Champion and delighted with the Business Group’s continued support from the Welsh Government and Economy Minister.

“I’m confident that this year we will continue to build on our achievements.”
