A HAY-ON-WYE businessman has been unveiled as the new operator of the Lakeside Restaurant in Llandrindod Wells.

Phillip Sayce received the keys to the building today, Thursday June 20 from Councillor Garry Banks, Powys County Council's cabinet member for property and assets.

The council run restaurant was closed last September after the authority announced it intended to seek a private operator for the loss making outlet.

Campaigners also formed a community group which called for the council to secure the restaurant's future, insisting it is a vital asset for the town.

Mr Sayce said: "I'm delighted to be appointed the new operator of Llandrindod Wells' Lakeside Restaurant.

"Our ambition is to provide a welcoming facility and one that the people of Llandrindod Wells and the surrounding area can be proud of. I want to work with local community groups in the area and am looking forward to speaking to them in the very near future."

The council sought private operators for the restaurant in April this year who were willing to take it on a five year business lease.

Cllr Banks said: "The tender submitted by Mr Sayce had innovative ideas, particularly regarding engaging with the local community. He has a successful business background with a highly experienced team behind him, including an experienced catering team.

"I would like to wish Mr Sayce the very best for the future in running this picturesque lakeside facility."

Councillor Tom Turner, the local member for Llandrindod South where the restaurant is located, added: "I would like to congratulate Mr Sayce on his appointment as the new operator of this facility. It is in a fantastic location and I hope the people of Llandrindod Wells get behind him when the restaurant becomes fully operational."

No date for the restaurant's re-opening has yet to be announced.
