Voters in one part of Llandrindod Wells will be going to the polls on May 7 to choose their next representatives in Cardiff Bay and also a new county councillor.
Powys County Council has confirmed that a by-election will be held for the vacant Llandrindod South ward seat on Thursday, May 7.
This is also the date when polls will be open across Wales for the Senedd elections.
On Monday, March 30, the council issued its “notice of election”, which explains that potential candidates have until 4pm on Thursday, April 9 to get their nomination papers either into County Hall or email them over.
The council said: “Nomination papers may be obtained from the returning officer at County Hall, Llandrindod Wells, or electronically via [email protected]
“If the election is contested, the poll will take place on May 7.”
People who are not registered to vote still have time to get on the electoral roll.
The council said: “Applications to register to vote must reach the electoral registration officer by midnight on April 20 and can be made online at: www.gov.uk/register-to-vote
“Electors should take note that applications to vote by post or requests to change or cancel an existing application must reach the electoral registration officer at County Hall by 5pm on April 21.
“Applications to vote by proxy must reach the Electoral Registration Office by 5pm on April 28.”
The by-election has been caused by the shock resignation of Josie Ewing earlier this month.
On Thursday, March 19, Ms Ewing, who had represented the Llandrindod South ward since her election in May 2022, took to social media to announce that she was resigning.
Ms Ewing said: “This has not been an easy decision.
“Serving the community I live in has been an honour, and I am deeply grateful to every resident who trusted me to represent them.
“I have listened to residents’ and staff concerns and carried your voices into rooms and meetings – where, too often, they are not truly heard.
“I cannot continue in a role that, in reality, holds so little power to deliver the change our communities are crying out for.
“Too many people are being let down by outdated frameworks, slow processes, and a lack of meaningful accountability.”
The resignation means the Liberal Democrats drop to 22 councillors, and the coalition with Labour slips back to 31 out of 67 councillors, with one vacancy.
