Chef Nick Brodie has had a taste of the limelight after taking part in the BBC’s professional cookery challenge the Great British Menu.

But while staff at the luxury Llangoed Hall Hotel in Llyswen will be sitting down in front of the television on Monday at 7.30pm to see how their head chef got on in the Wales regional heat Nick will be in the kitchen.

"No way am I going to watch, I’ll be straight to work," laughed Nick who has worked at the hotel for nearly five years.

"I have watched the Great British Menu in the past but I’m not one for that. The boss made me do it."

This year’s series sees 24 of Britain’s top chefs competing for the chance to cook at the Taste of Summer banquet celebrating 140 years of the Wimbledon Championships.

Nick and fellow contestants Paul Croasdale and Phil Carmichael, who has appeared in the competition on three previous occasions, had to cook starters to impress a veteran judge.

While Paul and Phil opted for tomato dishes Nick put his hopes in a rabbit and carrot dish.

"I went for what we have here in the garden at Llangoed," said Nick.

"We’re thoroughly self sufficient and I wanted to promote what I do and serve Welsh produce. We’ve got carrots in the garden and rabbits everywhere."

The rabbit Nick served was supplied by butcher Paddy Sweeney from Brecon’s Market Arcade.

"My rabbit was from Paddy and I also do a lamb dish which I get from Paddy as well."

To see how Nick gets on in the competition tune into BBC Two at 7.30pm on Monday, June 5.
