ON Bank Holiday Sunday it seems as though most of the region had descended on Llangynidr for their annual show.

Although some regular competitors were unable to make the event, instead taking advantage of the glorious weather to complete jobs on their farms, there was still strong competition across the stock classes with 349 sheep and 36 cattle entries. H Williams won Supreme Champion with his Torddu Badger Face Welsh Mountain ram lamb and R Jones triumphed in the Group Interbreed Championship with his Tal-y-Bont Welsh Mountains.

The Supreme Interbreed Cattle Champion title went to the Bowen Family with their Hereford Heifer with calf at foot.

The three horse rings were busy with Ridden, In Hand, Working Hunter and Show Jumping competitions.

Hayley Davies on Working Hunter Champion Elan won the overall title of Supreme Horse Show Champion. The Farmers’ and Producers’ marquee was full of great local food and craft products and also housed the stick making competition which this year saw a record number of entries (75), an increase of 15% from 2016. Judge Richard Vaughn expressed pleasure at the increase in the general standard and additional entries in the Novice Section. He awarded the best stick in show awards to Mr Rob Stokes (Craftsman) and Mr Paul Potter (Novice).

Over in the village hall the Llangynidr Garden Society held their 74th show supported by over 260 entrants displaying over 750 exhibits. The Rees family from Llanbedr did particularly well as Angela won the Novice Cup, the Best Vegetable in Section A and the Pam Free Memorial Trophy for Best Rose in show; Katie Rees won the Gilyeat Junior Craft Trophy and together they won the Family Trophy for the most points gained by parents and children.

Visitors were almost spoiled for choice when deciding how to fill their day. A packed programme of main ring entertainment included Gentle Giants Shire Horse display from Cardigan, Black Mountains Falconry and Powys Carriage Driving. There were also demonstrations galore including butchery from James East (Easts of Brecon), cookery, foraging, bee keeping, shearing, spinning, stone walling and coracles. As the show is dog-friendly across all of the site many of those that came with their animals entered into the spirit of the day by taking part in the dog show. Congratulations to the overall dog champion Keeli with handler Jane.

The perfect day ended with a speed shearing competition organised by Bwlch and Crickhowell YFC. This new event for the show was really well received and may become a regular fixture.

In 2017, one of the show’s founding members Linda Games passed away. She will be missed very much by all who knew her and as recognition of all that she did, the committee have announced that the Linda Games Bursary will be launched in 2018. More details will follow in the local press and on the show website www.llangynidrshow.org .

If you didn’t make it this year, Llangynidr Show August 26 should definitely be an entry in your 2018 diary.More pictures and show results in this week's Brecon and Radnor Express.
