A Brecon opticians has joined forces with a local swim club to swim nearly 14 miles in an hour – raising hundreds of pounds for Tenovus Cancer Care.

A team of 13 swimmers, made up of staff at Specsavers Brecon and Brecon Swim Club aged eight to 54, clocked up 900 lengths within 60 minutes in Brecon Leisure Centre’s 25-metre pool. They also dressed up in pink for the day and hosted an in-store cake sale. Combined, they raised £650.15 for the Welsh cancer charity.

Hannah Shepherd, store manager at Specsavers Brecon, says: “I am so proud of everyone who participated in this gruelling challenge to raise money and awareness for such a worthwhile cause. We all know someone who has been affected by cancer. It is difficult to put into words how important Tenovus Cancer Care’s work is.

“The charity funds ground-breaking research aimed at improving the lives of people with cancer. It also offers emotional as well as practical support and advice to people with cancer and those closest to them. The team enjoys raising money and awareness for worthwhile causes, in large part because of the overwhelming support we always receive from our community. Once again, we have been blown away by residents’ generosity – not only financially but also with their time and support.”
