June’s calendar of events gives you plenty of opportunity to head outdoors and get active in the scenery of the Brecon Beacons. Put on your walking boots and head along to an event from the 2016 Geopark Festival or test yourself with The WAAT4 and Bwlch with Altitude Challenges, or if you’d like a more relaxing month, why not go along to one of Theatr Brycheiniog’s many events or stroll around some open gardens. Here’s a handy guide to the best of what’s on from Brecon Beacons Tourism.

June 3

Brecon Cathedral Singing Weekend

The Brecon Cathedral Singing Weekend 2016 will run from the evening of Friday, June 3 to Sunday, June 5. Every year, singers come from far and wide to rehearse intensively and to sing a wide range of rewarding music at the cathedral services on Saturday and Sunday. Each singer pays a fee to take part which includes all meals and music copies for the weekend.

June 4

Bwlch with Altitude Challenge

Bwlch with Altitude is a family friendly navigational challenge in the Black Mountains region of the Brecon Beacons National Park, which can be conducted either by walking or on your mountain bike. It is a team event (minimum two; maximum eight members per team), while navigating the routes you will have to answer some basic questions and collect mementos and there will also be a prize for the best photograph taken during the challenge.

Llanfoist Open Gardens

Enjoy the gardens, and don’t forget to visit the village hall where excellent food, and drink, including a choice of Sunday lunches are available throughout the day. All of the gardeners have worked hard to get their gardens ready and are looking forward to seeing you when you visit them. We hope you will find plenty to interest you and maybe even some little inspiration for your own plot.Llanfoist is a very diverse village, steeped in history, but incorporating much that is modern and forever changing. Set between the Sugarloaf and Blorenge mountains to the southwest of Abergavenny we are in a beautiful location.

’Belonging’ at Theatr Brycheiniog

Inspiring and moving. Belonging is a powerful new play that follows the lives of two families as they discover that love and laughter don’t have to stop because of dementia. this bilingual production is based on Re-Lives’s in-depth interviews with people living with dementia, family members and professional carers. Belonging dispels the myths of demetia and shines a light on how together we can create a dementia-friendly Wales.

June 11

Man V Horse Race

The Man v Horse Marathon began in June 1980 following a chat over a pint (or three) in the back bar of Neuadd Arms Hotel. The then-landlord, Gordon Green overheard two men discussing the relative merits of men and horses running over mountainous terrain. Thirteen unusual events that could not fit into ’mainstream’ are now part of the Llanwrtyd persona, and we are not finished yet. In 2005 Green Events was the winner of the Welsh Tourist Board (now Visit Wales) ’Top Day(s) Out in Wales’ award, presented at a glittering ceremony in Cardiff.

June 11-12

Llanfrynach Flower Festival

Llanfrynach is celebrating The Queen’s 90th Birthday with a weekend of events to attract people of all ages and interests. On Saturday, June 11 there will be a Flower Festival of ’Royal Hats and Handbags’ in the church. There will also be many and varied displays and workshops such as Scything, Mosaics, face painting, salt dough, stained glass and knitting. For the more adventurous there is a treasure hunt and labyrinth.Refreshments will be available on both days.The Flower Festival will also be held on Sunday, June 12.

Crickhowell Open Gardens

Crickhowell Open Gardens is run for the benefit of the community. Funds raised will be used to support local good causes. Over 20 different gardens, plus plant sales and children’s activities. Free parking and shuttle bus (not for wheelchairs) Refreshments, lunches, cream teas available. £5 for adults one day, £7.50 for two days-children free, tickets at the Market Hall- 10:30am-4pm.

June 16

Ascot Ladies Day at the Angel Hotel

Ladies will be greeted with a glass of fizz upon arrival into The Grand Ballroom.

The afternoon begins with live viewing of the Royal Procession at 2pm and continues with the following six races. In between the on screen action, High Tea will be served and Alison will be showcasing her latest designs. All ladies are asked to attend in traditional Royal Ascot attire and there will be a prize for best dressed lady. Each table will also be given a randomly selected horse to champion in each race.

June 18

WAAT 4 Challenge

The WAAT4 Challenge is a prestigious navigation event in Wales’ beautiful Brecon Beacons National Park. Teams from all over the UK take part every year.

Its reputation is growing quickly and it features in the walking calendar for such events. In 2015 more than 500 competitors took part over either 30km or 40km Challenges which included South Wales’ highest peak - Pen y fan.

June 25

Scottish Dancing at the National Park Visitor Centre - from 2pm.

Free entry. Come and join the South Wales Branch of the Royal Scottish Dance Society for an afternoon of dancing to the accordion playing of the world famous George Meikle. There will be demonstrations of dances by various teams interspersed with easy dances that everyone can join in. Come along and join in the fun. Suitable for children and adults.
