A faithful dog stayed with her missing owner for hours until he was found by a search helicopter on Saturday evening.

Molly stayed with her owner after he slipped in the Brecon area while taking the dog for her afternoon walk at around 1.30pm.

Dyfed-Powys Police and Brecon Mountain Rescue Team were both involved in the search for the man who was found near Cradoc Golf Club around five hours later.

The voluntary mountain rescue team were deployed to find the man after he was spotted by a police helicopter - police rescue dogs along with search and rescue dogs were also involved in the rescue.

During his usual walk with Molly, the man slipped in the wet mud and couldn’t get back up, but loyal Molly did not leave his side while he awaited rescuers.

Brecon MRT volunteer Jess Bowen said that the man, who was “cold, a bit in shock and disorientated”, was stretchered to an ambulance before being taken to hospital “as a precaution”.

The voluntary mountain rescue team posted about the incident online: “Here is Molly the dog getting lots of hugs after remaining by her owners side whilst he lay for hours until he was found last night.

“A dog really is a man’s / woman’s best friend! Big well done to Molly who enjoyed the treats back at the control vehicle.

“Also a big shout out to Rusty the dog and owner Steve from the Search and Rescue Dog Association South Wales who attended their first call out after passing out as a search dog.”

Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, Brecon MRT has not been able to host its usual fundraisers which are crucial for funding the teams equipment and fuel.

Each call out costs, on average, £550 and there are around 100 callouts per year for the team of volunteers.
