The body of a man has been discovered in the canal in Brecon, police have confirmed.
Dyfed-Powys Police said they were called to the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, between The Watton and Dering Lines, just before 5.10pm on Saturday during the town’s Jazz Festival.
A spokeswoman said the man is thought to be in his 60s and his death is not being treated as suspicious.
While formal identification has not yet taken place, police say his next of kin and the coroner have been informed.
The spokeswoman added: “Anyone with information that can help officers piece together the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident is urged to contact Brecon Police."
Holidaymaker Brian Hughes who is renting Beynon House, a cottage that overlooks the canal from The Watton, said he was having an afternoon nap on the property's veranda when he woke up to see several police cars pull up and park in the lane on the opposite bank near the Watton Lime Kilns.
"I heard they had found something in the canal, a man's body. He was said to be in his 60s. I was just having a kip and woke up when the police arrived. They cordoned off the canal path there. That's all I know really."
The police spokeswoman said Brecon police could be contacted on 101. She added: “If you are deaf, hard of hearing, or speech impaired, text the non-emergency number on 07811 311 908 quoting reference 292 of August 12.”
