A production, marketing, and development company founded in Brecon eight years ago is set to make a move back to the town with an exciting new project.
Founder of Northhouse Studios, Chris Peet, started the company in 2013 in Brecon town centre and has now teamed up with sound engineer, Dean Richards, to bring a creative hub to Brecon which will allow people to showcase their talents, learn new skills, and of course, be creative.
Since founding Northhouse Studios in 2013 Chris has worked with companies, like as the BBC and ITV and has also worked in Italy with some of their top artists before moving back to Wales.
After first working together many years ago, Chris and Dean were put back into contact with each other through Chris’ wife’s yoga classes. and collaborated on a project at Christ College Brecon.
With Chris wanting to expand Northhouse, Dean was keen to join him.
He told The Brecon and Radnor Express: “I was at a bit of a crossroads with where I was going with things and this seemed like a natural fit. We both had this bigger idea of what else it could be.”
Moving in to what used to be Harley’s nightclub on Ship Street, the pair will be providing the local community and surrounding areas with a recording studio, a podcasting suite, sound and video workshops, classroom and function room hire, as well as acting as a venue for live events.
Despite the challenge of the past few years, the co-owners did not hesitate when they saw the chance to move into the new building.
Dean explained, “It couldn’t be a more perfect space with it being an old nightclub that’s soundproof. There’s space for a cafe, huge facilities, a control room.
“Anything and everything we could have wanted from a building is there, we just need to go and put our own stamp on it.”
Chris and Dean have set up a crowdfunding page to help them get started. After just two days, they raised up to £1,000, which Chris and Dean have been extremely thankful for.
Chris said: “Everyone’s been unbelievably generous. It’s been very heartwarming and quite frankly any sum of money is a lot of money these days”
Northhouse is keen to help local artists, and people who may be interested in sound production.
They will be offering access to their state of the art equipment and are aiming to show people that they can have a career in the arts industry.
“We also want to make it accessible so that bands and artists can come and do live sessions that will be overseen by us, but run by people who have learnt the skills in our workshops.”
Chris described the hands-on experience that people will gain through having the opportunity to work on a live event,
“They’ll get to feel that pressure, the energy and the buzz of it. It can go a long way in people’s development, and confidence building.”
In their workshops, Chris and Dean give people the skills and confidence to tackle common problems, which they hope will the valuable experience for their career ahead,
“I can’t emphasis enough the real world applied environment we’re providing, it’s priceless.
“If you want to do anything in this industry, it’s priceless to have that sort of knowledge.” said Dean.
The pair are also keen to contribute to the local community in terms of entertainment with live events, and also helping out local businesses where they can thank to the installation of their podcasting suite
Chris said, “Everyone’s listening to long format podcasts nowadays, like Joe Rogan and even BBC Sounds.
“Businesses and community groups in the area might be saying ‘How do you do it?’ ‘How do you get going?’ and what we’d love to do is say ‘well if you go in that room, sit around this table, push the ON button’ and then show them how to produce and publish it.
“We’ll also show them how to conduct themselves and very quickly they can pick it up.”
Northhouse Brecon will also have a cafe, where Chris and Dean hope to have some live acoustic sessions as well as book signings, and question and answer sessions with artists that Chris and Dean have links to. “It’s going to be a music media-centric place,” said Chris.
They have also stressed the importance of Northhouse Studios being accessible for people from any background.
“I’ve never had a price list, it has always been pay what you can,” said Chris.
Dean expressed their aims for the hub by saying: “The ethos around it is accessibility, education and bringing enthusiasm for the music scene and the arts in general.”
Chris and Dean are hoping to launch their Creative Hub in March, for it to be available and accessible to the public.
