The Market Hall in Brecon has been a centre of bartering and trading since 1897 - and markets were held on the site for decades before the current hall was built.

In recent years the markets, which are held every Tuesday and Friday, have fallen in popularity with shoppers and it has become apparent the hall itself has seen better days.

To arrest the decline a change in management saw Brecon Town Council take responsibility for the twice weekly markets and it has contracted local company Little Bird Creative to promote and manage the markets.

The hall remains in the ownership of Powys County Council which encouraged the new management as a way of reviving the markets and supporting the shops which trade six days a week in the market arcade.

We sent Lily King to meet the market traders, old and new.

Among the new breed at the market is 21-year-old Jay Usher who has taken advantage of new terms, intended to encourage a more diverse range of traders, to set up a record stall.

Among the stalls at the market are traders offering merchandise such as art and craftwork, jewellery and children’s books.
