Donald Trump’s deplorable comments questioning the role of NATO forces in Afghanistan require a serious response.

British soldiers, sailors and airmen served on the frontline throughout that conflict, and four hundred and fifty-seven servicemen and women tragically lost their lives. Their service and sacrifice deserve respect, particularly from those who claim to be our closest allies.

In Brecon and Radnor, we understand service. Our communities have long and proud military connections, shaped by generations who served in the Armed Forces, and by the communities that raised them. Veterans and serving personnel are part of everyday life here, and the realities of military service are not distant or abstract.

These comments reflect a wider shift in the international political environment. Russian aggression continues to threaten European security, while long-standing assumptions about alliances and stability are under increasing strain. In this context, Britain must approach defence with seriousness and realism, and national security must be treated as a core responsibility of government.

Support for the Armed Forces must be matched by sustained investment and clear strategic direction. Years of underfunding have left gaps in capability that now require urgent attention, and addressing those gaps is essential to maintaining a credible and effective defence.

That is why I have been clear about the need to increase defence spending. The Liberal Democrat are proposing Defence Bonds as a practical way to raise billions to modernise our Armed Forces and move towards spending three per cent of GDP on defence. It would also give the public a direct stake in strengthening our national security.

The people of Brecon and Radnor understand what service means; we also understand why preparedness matters; it is time the Government takes note.
