Jane Dodds has asked the Welsh Government what it is doing to tackle speeding on trunk roads around Brecon.
The Mid and West Wales MS said at the Senedd that a few months ago, she attended a village meeting with residents from Libanus and Llanspyddid who raised serious concerns about speeding, road safety and the impact of traffic on their communities.
Following the public meeting on August 12, Ms Dodds and Powys County Councillor Raiff Devlin formally requested action to tackle speeding, pedestrian safety, and environmental concerns along the A470.
In a letter to Welsh Government officials, Ms Dodds outlined six key proposals, including reducing the speed limit from 50mph to 30mph, installing a pedestrian island, adding flashing vehicle-activated speed signs, and improving road signage. An expedited survey for the crossing point was also requested.
Speaking in the Senedd this week, Ms Dodds said: “I passed these concerns to the Welsh Government - they were also in attendance at those meetings - in August, but I’m still waiting for a response.
“I’d welcome a statement outlining what the Government is doing to address these concerns, and what steps are being taken.”
The Trefnydd, Jane Hutt, said many MSs across the Chamber could also reflect on concerns residents have in terms of speeding on roads, particularly in rural areas.
She told Ms Dodds: “Previous speed reviews concluded that speed limits should remain at 50 mph.
“But the current guidance on setting speed limits in Wales is being updated to reflect changes made for the 20 mph introduction.
“When this new guidance on speed limits is published, it’ll be reviewed across Wales, including this section of the A40 and A470.
“That does include a review at Libanus and Llanspyddid. We need to make sure that that information gets back to local residents.”
