The showcaves are one of the oldest attractions in Wales and since the caves have been open to the public they have witnessed many tragic events including two world wars.

However, what is happening to the people in Ukraine must rank as one of the most appalling acts of aggression to have been inflicted on any independent European country since the last war.

Everyone at the caves wants to express their horror at scenes from the television coverage clearly showing the wanton destruction of a European country. However, how can a small Welsh attraction show its support for the Ukrainians?

Ashford Price, Chairman of the showcaves said : “We will be donating to the Ukrainian Appeal fund, but also want to express our total horror at the way Putin and his generals are killing innocent people, destroying their homes, and laying waste Ukrainian cities.

To this end Russian officials in Embassies, Putin supporters, and oligarchs are not welcome at the caves this season.

A Ukrainian flag will be flown at the main entrance to the showcaves. Collection boxes for donations to Ukraine will also be available should people wish to donate.

The First Minister for Wales is seeking ways to assist displaced Ukrainian refugees by making them welcome in Wales. Again, as a small gesture we intend to offer these refugees a free visit to the caves when it becomes clearer how the Welsh Government intends to bring the above about.

We realise that the above are only very small gestures in a tragic scenario that is being played out in Europe but hope other tourism businesses in Wales will also find ways to express their support for Ukraine, and their outrage at what Putin is doing to these brave proud people”.
