A new charity aiming to teach people how to make furniture and household items from recycled materials in Kenya has set up home in Powys.

Appropriate Paper-Base Technology (APT) 4 Social Development has established workshops in both Welshpool and Talybont-on-Usk.

The charity works with a volunteer sister group in Njoro, an agricultural town on western rim of the Rift Valley in Kenya.

As well as mentoring on creating simple furniture and items, the charity also works on creating assistive equipment for children with cerebral pasty - such as chairs and standing frames. Items are made-to-measure from recycled materials, are low cost, and are suitable for low and middle income countries who may not have access to specialist equipment.

Two organisations - Jinx Ltd and Quest 88 Ltd - have recently stepped in with donations. Social Development has thanked these organisations for their contributions which will be taken to Kenya at the end of this month when three Welsh volunteers will travel out to delivery training to the Kenyan team. The training, a national Kenyan workshop, and trainer have been funded by grants from the Gibbs Trust and Hub Cymru Africa.

The charity has also received a small grant from PAVO to support the Powys workshops.
