THE chairman of Hay-on-Wye Town Council has said he is confident the town's public toilets will remain open beyond the end of this year.

Powys County Council had planned to close toilets in the Craft Centre and at the Clock Tower at the end of this month unless the council, or another third party, stepped forward to take over the running costs.

But Councillor Robert Golesworthy said following talks with the county council he believes the toilets will remain open longer.

Ideas including a levy on charges at Hay's Oxford Road car park or introducing coin-operated turnstiles and doors on the toilets could help maintain the facilities.

Cllr Golesworthy also said the county council, if it has a clear commitment from the town council, could maintain the toilets until April.
