A Powys-based charity has set up a new venture to transform empty commercial spaces into usable workshops and studios.
Celf o Gwmpas, the arts charity based in Llandrindod Wells, has set up Celf Spaces, a new not-for-profit scheme which will transform empty commercial spaces into affordable studio, rehearsal, exhibition and co-working spaces for Wales artists and creatives.
Research shows that the arts are critical for sustaining healthy, happy societies, yet in the UK artists have increasingly precarious work environments as they are often priced-out of renting town and city centre units by expensive, commercial rates.
This in turn limits public access to art, by restricting how and where artists can share their work through exhibitions, workshops and performances.
Celf Spaces seeks to transform empty commercial spaces into accessible, affordable work spaces for Wales’ diverse, thriving artist and creative community and by doing so make more space for public access to art beyond the walls of traditional institutions. Celf Spaces will open new art spaces and create an emergent community of artists and creatives who will support a collective reimagining of the shape and form of towns and cities.
Jane Cooke, Celf of Gwmpas Development Manager and heart-felt work coach said:
“Celf Spaces is an important contribution to the arts and communities in Wales. With options for affordable work spaces in empty retail units, artists will be bringing the arts into city centres, brightening up shopping arcades and offering chances to engage with art as part of everyday shopping experiences.
“This creative response to the increasing empty spaces in retail units keeps these areas vibrant and lively and that helps everyone’s well-being. Celf Spaces helps connects artists to communities, brings art to unexpected places, supports artists and enlivens everyday life.”
