A VOTE of no confidence that was due to take place in the councillor in charge of education in Powys today has been cancelled after she left the post.

Myfanwy Alexander, the cabinet member for education and the Welsh language in the Independent/Conservative cabinet, was moved to the role of cabinet member for adult social care late on Tuesday evening.

Conservative Cllr Phyl Davies, who had been the cabinet member for property, replaces the Independent Cllr Alexander in the schools role though the Welsh speaker keeps her responsibility for the language.

The re-shuffle was prompted by the resignation of two cabinet members, ahead of the intended no confidence vote at a special full council meeting at County Hall today. That meeting has no been cancelled as Cllr Alexander is no longer in the education post. She had come under pressure over a critical report into the council’s education department and schools by inspectors Estyn.

Council leader Rosemarie Harris announced the re-shuffle hours after Cllr Stephen Hayes, who had responsibility for social care, and Cllr Martin Weale, the cabinet member for the economy and planning, announced they had quit her top team.

In a statement the council said Cllr Harris intends announcing further changes, including restoring her cabinet back to 10 members, in "due course".

Cllr Harris who had thanked the two departing members said of their replacements: ""I am making these changes to my cabinet today as it is important to have experienced cabinet members in these key posts so we can press ahead with the transformation of education and social care."

The changes were announced after today’s print edition of The Brecon & Radnor Express had gone to press.
