With 22 stories now under its belt and several more in the pipeline right now, the Brecon Story project has started to capture some of the history, heritage and culture of our fascinating and ancient town.
The bilingual website (breconstory.wales and storiaberhonddu.cymru) houses these stories which have so far ranged from covering current arts and cultural events, to recent and ancient history, also taking in stories about illustrious local people along the way.
Having been originally set up under an Arwain Powys grant, the Brecon Story project is now actively recruiting volunteers to get involved.
Free training sessions are underway which have been funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and weekly digital drop-in sessions started at the Muse last Wednesday, November 17, afternoon.
These informal sessions - which run from 1pm until 3pm - are for anyone to drop by and talk about creating new stories, getting help with recording and editing on your smart phone or laptop, or getting help to access the Brecon Story online training sessions.
It’s also a great place to meet new people over a cuppa and friendly help will be on hand if you have any digital questions.
The free online training sessions are ongoing with the most popular courses being repeated through Winter.
Project coordinator, Julia Blazer said:
“We’ve had a great response to our online training sessions so far, covering a wide range of the most useful digital skills from basic social media right through to recording and editing video & audio on a smart phone.
“People have also really enjoyed learning about storytelling and are now feeling more confident but the new face-to-face Wednesday afternoon sessions at The Muse will be great.
“They also also hope that people both young and old who already have good digital skills will engage with the Brecon Story and join in their buddy system to help other volunteers learn.
“Whether you have a business, are already a volunteer locally, have a story about Brecon to tell or just want to meet new people, there are lots of enjoyable ways to engage with the project.”
Brecon Story is an independent not-for-profit organisation that is currently supported by Brecon Town Council, Powys County Council and the Brecon Beacons Sustainable Development Fund, and works with all the town’s key cultural places and businesses. To learn more or get involved, please email [email protected] or pop by The Muse on a Wednesday afternoon between 1 – 3pm (apart from December 8).
