BRECON residents have helped raise hundreds of pounds for Velindre by taking part in a local opticians’ raffle.

Customers at the Specsavers store on High Street were encouraged to donate to be in the chance of winning the hamper, which included gift vouchers for local shops, a Sunday lunch for two, afternoon tea, a pair of sunglasses worth £99 and a selection of snacks, chocolates and drinks.

More than £850 was collected through raffle ticket sales for Velindre, a cancer charity that supports more than 1.5 million people with cancer in South Wales and beyond.

Donna Like, Spec-savers store director in Brecon, said: ‘This is the second year we have put on the raffle and it’s always so encouraging to see the generosity of the public in supporting our charity initiatives. Last year, we raised £500, so to nearly double that total this year is nothing but pretty remarkable.”

The winner, Phillip Joy, was invited to the store where he was presented with the hamper by dispensing optician, Hannah Shepherd.

“Velindre plays a vital role in the lives of so many people with cancer in our community and it’s a charity we’re proud to support,” Donna added.
