Who is Orlando? Find out in this life-affirming, comedic tale of an immortal poet, whose gender cannot be pinned down, whose spirit cannot be caged, and whose irreverent, romantic adventures across British history – from the 1600s to the present day – provide a magic-realist exploration of human identity; personal, sexual and national.
Drawing on a decade’s worth of critically-acclaimed theatre-making, Dyad Productions explore what it means to find our place in the world whilst remaining utterly true to who we are when they bring their production of Orlando to Theatr Brycheiniog on May 23.
Based on the satirical 1928 novel by Virginia Woolf and starring rising actress Rebecca Vaughan, subtle changes to the lead character’s costume created by costume designer Kate Flanaghan, take the audience on a journey through changing centuries all the way from the Tudor period to modern day.
Rebecca Vaughan gives a towering performance and proves herself to be one of the most exciting young performers on the British Stage as her monologue becomes an intimate and captivating confession between character and audience.
Cheeky, romantic and heart-warming, Elton Townend Jones’ interpretation is both funny and challenging and creatively brings Viginia Woolf’s story into the modern day. In a world where more and more people are questioning strict gender norms and identifying as ‘non-binary’, the fluidity of gender in Orlando comes across as increasingly relevant. As well as seeing the centuries gone by from a female perspective, this is an opportunity to see a strong, versatile performer taking full command of her stage.
Orlando is staged at Theatr Brycheiniog in Brecon on Thursday, May 23 at 7.30pm. To book tickets or for more details visit www.brycheiniog.co.uk or call 01874 611622.
