Police officers based in Brecon were at the town’s high school recently to encourage young people to sign up for their next intake of cadets.

PC Cheryl Rudge, who leads the cadet unit in Brecon, told pupils about the sort of opportunities and experiences they could look forward to.

She said: “They get to build their self-confidence, their leadership and presentation skills, and they get the opportunity to earn a Duke of Edinburgh award.

“It is a great way of getting new skills and its a good insight into the police, how we work and the work we do with the community.

“There’s a lot of good work that goes on – it sets a routine.”

The Volunteer Police Cadets Police UK website, a national site for all police cadets, says that it teaches young people how to be good citizens and inspires them and helps them to acquire a spirit of adventure.

Cadet coordinator PC Huw Freeman said: “We are also looking for leaders, and for members of the community who are happy to help with the outdoor side as well.

“It’s really good fun and a good venture as well. Out cadets volunteer for three hours a month for the community, and the work they do is really good.”

The group held an open day at the police station last Monday to give prospective cadets, their parents and carers, and those who were interested in helping out a chance to ask questions and learn more.

Anybody who is interested in joining the police cadets in Brecon can either contact Cheryl Rudge at Brecon police station or they can visit the VPC Police UK website.
